Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark the sixth anniversary of the Red Friday Campaign in Canada:

“Six years ago today, Lisa Miller and Karen Boire launched the Red Friday movement in Canada with a rally on Parliament Hill. This grassroots initiative – which encourages Canadians to wear red on Fridays as a tribute to members of the Canadian Armed Forces – is a simple yet effective way for us to show our support to those who risk their lives so that we can live in peace and security.

“Since the launch of the campaign, wearing red has become a central theme in numerous events, celebrations and rallies supporting our troops across Canada. It has also become a meaningful expression of our admiration and gratitude for those who protect our freedom and security.

“As we celebrate the anniversary of the Red Friday Campaign, I want to encourage Canadians to continue the proud tradition of wearing red on Fridays as a symbol of our solidarity and continued support for the men and women who bravely serve our country.”

Ottawa - On behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Blaine Calkins, Member of Parliament for Wetaskiwin, presented Ponoka resident Walter Burchnall with the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation.

“Mr. Burchnall has devoted countless hours to helping and honouring Veterans. He has made a real and lasting difference in the lives of his comrades in Ponoka,” said Minister Blaney. “Our Government is proud to recognize Mr. Burchnall’s dedication to his fellow Veterans and their families. His extraordinary efforts in commemorating Veterans and assisting them and their families make Mr. Burchnall a deserving recipient of the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation.”

“The community of Ponoka and, in fact, many Albertans have benefited from the service and contribution of Walter Burchnall,” said Mr. Calkins. “As a pilot in Burma who bravely served during the Second World War and as an active and dedicated volunteer in his community following the war, Mr. Burchnall has demonstrated his commitment to both his country and his community. He is truly deserving of this honour.”

Mr. Burchnall is a Second World War Veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He has held almost every executive position in his Royal Canadian Legion branch, including president. As a branch service officer, Mr. Burchnall assisted Veterans and their dependants in

applying for benefits and services, helped families of Veterans with funeral arrangements, performed countless Legion tributes at funeral services and acted as an agent in obtaining headstones, at considerable savings, for Veterans’ graves in the Field of Honour. Mr. Burchnall

also served on a committee to construct a new community cenotaph, undertaking much of the manual work.

Mr. Burchnall continues to assist with twilight candlelight tributes at the local cemetery and takes part in Decoration Day ceremonies by placing flags on Veterans’ graves at dawn. He has been honoured with a Royal Canadian Legion Life Membership and the prestigious Meritorious Service Medal.

The Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation includes a bar, which can be worn below official decorations on a Veteran’s blazer, as well as a lapel pin for civilian wear and a certificate.

The Commendation is presented to individuals who have contributed to the care and well-being of Veterans and to the remembrance of their contributions, sacrifices and achievements. It is intended primarily for Veterans, but in some circumstances may also be awarded to non-Veterans. Nominations may be submitted at any time and are reviewed annually by an advisory committee.

Ottawa - On behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of

Veterans Affairs, Royal Galipeau, Member of Parliament for

Ottawa-Orléans, joined 120 students with Encounters with Canada at a

special ceremony held at the National War Memorial to mark the 95th

anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The youth participants,

representing every province and territory, are in Ottawa for a week-long

awareness session on the Battle of Vimy Ridge and the First World War.

“It is heartening to see young Canadians so passionate about, and

engaged in, the act of commemorating those who defended our values of

peace, freedom and democracy in the First World War,” said Minister

Blaney. “Because this group of young Canadians is engaged in

remembrance, the contributions and sacrifices of our Veterans will be

recognized and appreciated for generations to come.”

“Today, we remember the more than 650,000 brave Canadians who served

during the First World War and the more than 66,000 who lost their

lives,” said MP Galipeau. “Your Government is committed to honouring

the important sacrifices and contributions of those who served Canada 95

years ago.”

Over the last 30 years, the Encounters with Canada program has helped

more than 89,000 young Canadians learn about themselves and their

country, through a week of citizenship and leadership activities. During

the commemorative ceremony, the students presented their original

reflections on the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The significance of the

occasion was also marked by the release of 95 doves.

It was 95 years ago on Easter Monday, in 1917, that the four divisions

of the Canadian Corps, fighting side-by-side for the first time,

captured Vimy Ridge. By the fourth day, April 12, Canadians controlled

the entire ridge. The victory at Vimy was not without a price. There

were more than 10,600 casualties. Of those, approximately 3,600 gave

their lives.

Ottawa - On April 9, His Excellency the Right Honourable David

Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, and the

Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, will participate

in a commemorative ceremony at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, in

France, to mark the 95th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

The Governor General and the Minister will be joined by a Canadian

delegation including representatives of Veterans’ organizations, the

Department of National Defence, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and

parliamentarians. In addition, close to 5,000 Canadian youth will

participate in events marking the anniversary.

Veterans have been taken advantage of - those who have stood in the gap for you & me - Standing between Freedom and Tyranny.

A dirty little skirmish is being successfully swept under the carpet by our government. For years the government, through its Service Income Security Insurance Plan (SISIP), has been taking money way from veterans. Like most skirmishes, this one gets little notice from the traditional news media and is not well-known known by the public. But that may soon change; the fight is finally in the courts.

Mr. Dennis Manuge is the representative plaintiff in a class action against the Canadian government. Peter Driscoll, a lawyer from McInnes Cooper, will be arguing the case. But why fight? Why not settle out of court or give veterans what they are owed? The government may hesitate because more than $500,000,000.00 (1/2 Billion) is at stake.

Half a Billion sounds like a lot of money but I am sure it could be funded from the 2 Billion in Tax Revenue generated from Tobacco sales or the approximate 7.7 Billion generated from alcohol sales. Besides, to date, the government has spent a mere half-million ($482,740.00) to fight veterans claims.

No one wins in a war, and in this little fight veterans stand to lose money; however, the government stands to lose the trust of its troops and future soldiers. Why join the military if you know you will be robbed of your insurance? The government has demonstrated a lack of strategic thinking.

Stand up for your veterans. Write your MP and insist that veterans receive the full benefits of the Long Term Disability insurance plan. No one wins in a war, but a dirty little skirmish can be profitable.

The Canadian Airborne Forces Association (CAFA) and the Airborne Regiment Association of Canada (ARAC), wish to address the recent media coverage that has been published or aired regarding the disbandment of the Canadian Airborne Regiment (CAR) in 1995. That event was a shoddy, politically expedient affair and caused a great deal of pain throughout the Airborne world and indeed for the Canadian Army as a whole. It is our belief that the entire story should be brought to the attention of all Canadians and their political leaders.

The Airborne Community at large has reacted strongly since Sunmedia’s story first broke in end-May 2011. Given that recent media coverage and the imminent analysis of the Canadian Army’s structure post the Afghanistan mission, it is timely to consider the re-establishment of the Canadian Airborne Regiment.

The attached position paper, “Righting A Wrong”, has been developed to fairly and accurately reflect the issues surrounding the disbandment of the CAR and to provide you with more detail of what actually transpired, the timeline of events leading to the disbandment and why. This paper has been approved by the presidents of both CAFA and ARAC and has been accepted by both associations as their joint position on this matter. Consequently, the paper represents the views of the Airborne Community at large as well as these two associations. Our Official Spokesperson is Major General H.C. (Herb) Pitts.

…It is hoped that the attached position paper “Righting a Wrong” will bring this important story to the attention of the Canadian public. Many Canadians never knew, or fully understood, the complete story of the Regiment’s disbandment. To this day, they associate the Regiment primarily with the “horrific” news stories of the time surrounding the deaths of the two Somalis at the hands of a few soldiers. Those were terrible and tragic events – but should not have led to the disbandment of the Regiment. Most certainly it should not have led to the perception that the Regiment was disbanded in disgrace.

Veterans Affairs Minister Steven Blaney Begins Two-Day Visit to New Brunswick

Saint John - The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, launched a two-day, fact-finding visit to New Brunswick this morning when he and Rodney Weston, Member of Parliament for Saint John, met with staff at the Saint John District Office of Veterans Affairs

Canada.

Minister Blaney then joined one of the Department’s case managers on a pair of routine home visits with Veterans in the Saint John area.

“It’s gratifying to see first-hand the work our employees do every day to deliver essential services and benefits to our honoured Veterans,” said Minister Blaney. “This is the kind of insight that will prove invaluable as we continue to make improvements within the Department in the way we care for and support our Veterans, Canadian Forces members and their families.”

The Minister’s first day in New Brunswick is scheduled to end with a visit to the Ridgewood Veterans’ Wing, where he and Mr. Weston will meet resident Veterans and their families as well as staff, other caregivers and members of local Veterans’ organizations.

Minister Blaney is also using his time in the province to inform Veterans, Canadian Forces members and their families about new improvements to the financial support available to seriously injured and vulnerable Veterans. The measures, contained in the Enhanced New

Veterans Charter Act and passed by Parliament in the spring, are expected to come into force this fall.

Additional Details on the Enhanced New Veterans Charter Act

The Enhanced New Veterans Charter Act, which was passed by the last Parliament in March 2011, features significant changes to the New Veterans Charter to address concerns raised by Veterans, their families, as well as members of Veterans’ organizations, advisory groups and parliamentary committees.

With these enhancements, which are expected to come into force this fall, the Government of Canada will:

● improve access to monthly benefits (worth up to an additional

$1,632 per month, and payable for life) for seriously injured Veterans;

● introduce a new monthly $1,000 supplement to the Permanent Impairment Allowance-also payable for life-to help our most seriously injured or ill Veterans who are unable to be suitably, gainfully employed; and

● provide flexible payment options for receiving a disability award.

Also, by amending regulations which govern the New Veterans Charter, the Government will establish a minimum pre-tax income of $40,000 a year for all ill and injured Veterans in the rehabilitation program or, if they are unable to be suitably and gainfully employed again, until age 65.

Improving access to the Permanent Impairment Allowance and the Exceptional Incapacity Allowance: When the New Veterans Charter was implemented in 2006, it resulted in some unforeseen gaps between the new charter and the Pension Act, which had previously served all Veterans. As a result, a number of severely injured Veterans found themselves ineligible for either the new Permanent Impairment Allowance under the New Veterans Charter or the Exceptional Incapacity Allowance under the Pension Act.

By correcting these eligibility barriers between the two systems, it is expected that as many as 3,500 Veterans will now qualify for either the Permanent Impairment Allowance or the Exceptional Incapacity Allowance over the next five years.

Introducing a monthly $1,000 supplement for permanently and severely injured Veterans:

Severely injured Veterans who are receiving the Permanent Impairment Allowance and are unable to be suitably, gainfully employed will receive an additional $1,000 per month for the rest of their lives. This would be added to other financial supports they may receive, such as the minimum, pre-tax income of $40,000 a year available through the Earnings Loss benefit. It is anticipated that approximately 500 Veterans will benefit from this change over the next five years.

Providing payment options for the Disability Award: The tax-free Disability Award is currently a one-time payment designed solely to recognize and compensate for the non-economic impact (the pain and suffering) of an injury or illness. It is in addition to other financial supports (such as the monthly Earnings Loss benefit and the Permanent Impairment Allowance) which recognize the ongoing economic impact of an injury. Under this change to the New Veterans Charter, CF members and Veterans will have new payment options for receiving their disability award. These options are:

● equal annual payments spread out over the number of years of their choice (with interest);

● a partial lump-sum payment with the balance paid out in annual instalments over any number of years (with interest); or

● a single lump-sum payment.

Veterans will also have the option-at any time-to receive the balance of their disability award in a final lump-sum payment.

Introducing a minimum annual Earnings Loss benefit: In addition to the legislated changes outlined above, the regulations which govern the New Veterans Charter are being amended to include a minimum annual, pre-tax income of $40,000 for recipients of the monthly Earnings Loss benefit. This enhancement should, over the next five years, increase the monthly financial support available to approximately 2,300 Veterans who either left the Canadian Forces while still at a low military rank or when military salaries were much lower than they are today.

As our youth are influenced by much of what we see around us, we as responsible adults are encouraged to assist them in their growth and responsible decision making.

In the tender years of pre-teens, we need to give our children opportunity which will encourage them to express themselves in a positive way, and art in its many forms is one way,

To assist mothers and fathers, I'm offering them an opportunity to help them, in their early stages of development.

As a child, I was encouraged to draw and to colour pictures, and when one of my pictures was selected and displayed for all the other students in the school to see, it was a very big boost to my moral. What I'm proposing to do, is to offer a similar opportunity for the children in our area to also have their talents displayed. Not just in their schools but here, where the whole world can view their work.

Children can then send links to their grandparents and other family members or even friends, letting them see their handy work.

I witnessed a remarkable move of God Saturday evening which can only be described as the Word recognizing the Word coming to pass.

In the book of Malachi in the last chapter and the last verse, the Word of God says: "And He (speaking of God) will turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse."

This of course is a two part prophesy. In Luke 1:17 the 1st part being the hearts of the father to the children was fulfilled, but there has always been this last portion (as it were,) still hanging on the Tree of Life.

I believe what I and many others witnessed on Saturday evening was God moving into a little log church nestled up against the foot of a mountain and touching the hearts of the children; bringing to pass the remaining portion.

This little log church is located just a few miles east of Maple Falls Washington. A group of young people were participating in a winter camp experience. They came from many places. From the reaches of the far north and unto the southern States. Many may have come for the winter activities such as skiing and snow boarding and all that entails, but God had other plans.

On the third night, (February, 5^th, 2011) God met with these young people in a very special way which can only be described as being Super Natural.

After the preaching was finished, there was such a liberation in the young people that has never been seen before. A shout went up, which must have lasted for two or more hours. It would move from one to another, and as It did, one could literally see their inhibitions simply falling away. There was dancing in the Spirit, they were crying and praying for one another without shame. This was not simply an emotional outcry, but it was a result of the Word of God striking their souls.

I suspect those who were caught in the "upper room" on the day of Pentecost must have experienced a similar phenomena as God imparted a portion of Himself upon each one of them in the form of a lick of Fire.

Seasoned men of God, who were in attendance later commented, that none of them had ever witnessed such a remarkable move of God. This undoubtedly is in direct response to the many prayers which have gone up to the Throne of Grace on their behalf.

Could this may be the ignition of the Bride's Revival which is promised to sweep Her into the coming Rapture? Brother Branham said: "these young men can take this Message and sweep It on to the Coming of the Lord". No doubt God will sweep It around the world, where ever God's Children may be, and they too will be ignited on Fire.

As this is noised abroad, It will do one of two things: for those who possess the Seed of God and are looking for the coming Rapture, It will ignite the hearts to Believe for the change in the body and those who do not believe, it will cause them to come against the Word, just as they did years ago in Jerusalem.

Embrace the Challenge

It's estimated that 100 million people will watch the Super Bowl this Sunday in Dallas. Of those, many will fork over thousands of dollars for a ticket to watch the game live. After just 60 minutes of football, the game will be over and the players on one team will experience one of the greatest moments of their lives.

Why is the feeling of winning so exhilarating? ...Because that which we work hardest for we appreciate the most.

The Value of Challenge
Imagine the quarterback scanning the field looking for a receiver. He locks in on the target 35 yards away, draws back his throwing arm and throws a perfect spiral downfield. The receiver reaches out both hands and catches the ball, pulls it in tightly up against his body and begins the run towards the end zone. He crosses the goal line and spikes the ball into the ground in celebration. It's a classic moment of triumph.

But what if he turns to look back towards the quarterback and realizes that there were no opponents on the field? No defenders trying to sack the quarterback. No defenders trying to intercept the pass. No defenders trying to take down the receiver in his run downfield. How exciting is the touchdown now? How sweet is the victory? How many people would watch a Super Bowl if there were no defenders?

The Price of Easy
Too often, we wish things would get easier in life. We'd like fewer problems to solve and fewer challenges to overcome but there's a price that we pay for easy: life becomes boring.

The last time I checked the only people that didn't have problems and challenges were dead. It's the problems and challenges that stimulate us, teach us, strengthen us and contain the juice of life. I assure you, the most successful people in the world do not have easier lives, but they are expert problem solvers. They don't always get it right, and they don't always win but they do understand one thing: that which they work the hardest for, they appreciate the most.

They rarely wish things were easier, they simply become better.

The trigger for this column is a Canadian senator! Yes, a senator.

He's a tiger when it comes to the military, particularly when it comes to the matter of how Canada's Veterans are being dealt with by Veterans Affairs Canada.

Of strong concern to Senator Kenny is the treatment of our military who have been/are being injured in Afghanistan. The treatment? Not good at all as the national print media have been digging out the facts in the past few weeks. The Senator is particularly concerned with the inequitable treatment of Reservists who are injured.

And so he should be. And so am I. Why? I was the first Chief of Reserves way back in 1978 to 1981. As an Air Force general, combat fighter pilot from the Second World War, I found myself responsible for advising the CDS, the Chief of the Defence Staff, on all matters relating to the militia, the naval reserves and the air reserves. Back in those days the Reserves were hardly given the time of day by the Regulars. I started the decade’s long push to change that attitude.

The Reservists now fill close to one third of the Canadian force in Afghanistan. They suffer death and tough injuries shoulder to shoulder with their Regular colleagues. But when it comes to compensation awards for the injuries the Reservists suffer--some of these are lifetime debilitating in the extreme--guess what?

The grand Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) ministry all comfortable down there in their cloistered headquarters in Charlottetown, PEI, will only give the Reservist a measly 40% of the compensation awarded to Regulars! Only 40%. That demeaning treatment by Veterans Affairs is disgraceful.

There must be a fundamental reason for the attitudinal indifference of Veterans Affairs to the Regulars and in particular to the Reservists. The reason goes this way. In my experience with Veterans Affairs in organizing the huge cross-Canada and in Normandy celebrations for the 2004 60th Anniversary of D-Day 6 June 1944 (I was chair of the VAC sponsored organizing committee) there are no Veterans in Veterans Affairs! There may be the odd one in the 1,300 VAC employees at Charlottetown, but in the management group I never discovered a singe one.

Never. Instead, VAC clearly has a many decades culture of the sequestered bureaucracy well away from the mainstream of government. It is a society unto itself with Veterans as clients but none inside the bureaucratic fort.

No wonder the Minister of Veterans Affairs (no military experience, nor does his woman deputy) recently admitted that VAC wasn't ready for the Veterans from Afghanistan.

Can I take the non-Veteran VAC point event further?

If I want to object/complain about a decision by VAC against me as a Veteran (I do), I can only take my complaint to the Veterans Review and Appeal Board. Where is the Board based? Charlottetown, of course. How many Board members are appointed including the Chair? Twenty-three. How many have military experience? Four! And all four are army.

Generally speaking, the problems at Veterans Affairs Canada have their roots in the organization (from top to bottom) being bureaucrats to the exclusion of Veterans.

The only way to change Veterans Affairs in favour of instead of against Veterans is to convert the place into a department filled with younger Veterans of all three services starting with the post of Deputy Minister--if the Prime Minister can't find a Veteran in his caucus to be minister.

Afghanistan casualty list raises serious credibility issues for Government treatment of Vets.

On January 12^th the Canadian News Service released the casualty statistics for Afghanistan for the year of 2010. During this period of time, 331 Canadians sustained non-battle injuries, the highest annual toll of the mission to date. 86 were wounded in action, blessedly, significantly down from the 124 WIAs of 2009. Two died by non-action conditions, testimony of the danger that always lurks in Afghanistan. 14, tragically, were KIA, the profoundly sad military acronym for killed in action.

These numbers are disturbing, particularly when one considers the amount of casualties Canada has sustained since the Afghanistan mission began and the context of Minister Blackburn’s litany of as yet unfulfilled promises in response to Veterans Ombudsman Pat Stogran’s press conference on August 17^th. 1244 Canadians have been injured under non-battle circumstances. These include traffic accidents, accidental weapons discharges, illness or repatriation for medical or compassionate reasons.

615 valiant Canadians have been Wounded in Action, injuries incurred from IEDS, mines, rockets and direct contact with the enemy. Those who have been wounded in friendly fire incidents during combat ops and those who have suffered severe psychological trauma as a consequence are also included in this equation.

18 Canadians have been killed in Afghanistan in what is noted as Deaths. These are the non-combat casualties.

136 have been killed in action by the end of the reporting period, December, 2010.

Lest we forget!

The dead. And, considering the acknowledged state of disconnect at the Veterans Affairs ministry, the living, incredibly patriotic Canadians who have paid the price or war in Afghanistan on Canada’s behalf with great sacrifice, blood and treasure. During the fall of 2010, Minister Blackburn informed Canadians that thousands of veterans are and have been living in substandard conditions. 2000 disabled veterans desperately require the $40,000 minimum annual salary, hundreds, perhaps thousands, will be accorded the $1000 Catastrophic Injury Award. He would speak of 3500 veterans, many who have been DENIED the ELB, with promises of re evaluation under new criteria. Yet regardless of the urgency, regardless of the need for immediate help these veterans NOW, the bill was not pushed forward prior to parliaments extended vacation from the House of Commons. Colonel Stogran righteously noted that none of these awards were retro-active, accordingly, every month of delay saves the government hundreds of thousands of dollars while concurrently depriving seriously injured Canadian veterans and their families the quality of life they have earned in blood.

Lest we forget!

The numbers! Collectively, Afghanistan WIAs-NBIs accounted for 1859 casualties to the end of 2010. Surely not all are the 2000 privates/corporals the 40000 dollar minimum annual salary proposal was created to assist? And how could have 3500 veterans be eligible for the ELB program when less then nineteen hundred have been officially wounded? I understand the potential for post mission issues such as PTSD and diligently champion support, but there are varying degrees of OSI, PTSD and not all levels result in permanent disabilities or an incapability to maintain a job and a, with support, good quality of life.

There are other aspects of Minister Blackburn's proposals deserving of scrutiny. The Earnings Loss Benefit, as often boasted by the government, replaces up to 75% of the disabled soldiers wages. BUT… The Manulife SISIP LTD policy already makes up to 75% of the soldiers wages, or will until Minister Blackburn’s proposed ELB legislation, should it pass, take effect . At this point of time, Manulife simply deducts the amount of the ELB, the PIA and/or the $40,000 wage minimum from the LTD payments they pay to the disabled soldier. This is tragic on several levels, foremost being the veteran is not really accorded any new source of income through this policy. 75 percent is 75 percent, because the burden of responsibility for the 75% thresh hold has simply been removed from the insurance company, to which the soldiers contributed all his career, and placed it squarely onto the taxpayer still results in the 75% payment. Fiscally conscious Canadians might question just why our soldiers are ordered to contribute into Manulife’s LTD insurance policy when the prospect of receiving compensation after a serious injury overseas has been negated by Minister Blackburn’s legislation.

Why is the taxpayer financially sponsoring, at great expense, a program that the members of the forces contributed thousands of dollars throughout their career to provide?

There was a time when conservatives, particularly during tough economic times, would have rallied to protect the taxpayers’ dollar from such waste instead of saving a non-governmental insurance company millions upon millions of dollars. Then again, there was a time when conservatives stood up for their wounded warriors, not abandoned them to substandard conditions created through the enactment of the New Veterans Charter and Canada’s life-time obligation to those who have suffered the horrid consequences of war in Canada’s name.

Subject: Update on Veterans Affairs.

Dear Mr Blackburn, MP

Your almost secret goodwill visit of eight (8) Canadian cities this week is considered a waste of time and a waste of tax payer’s money. When were you going to advertise it and invite all Veterans to attend? During the past five (5) years you have failed to listen to recommendations made by the Veteran’s Ombudsman, Veterans Organizations, Veterans Advocates and issues presented at the Veterans first rally. When will you take action with regards to the following outstanding Veterans issues?

· Veterans are calling for a formal Public inquiry into the office of Veterans Affairs to address the unacceptable behaviour and the mismanagement of Veterans issues and personnel files;

· To terminate the disability lump-sum payment that will cause serious financial hardship to many Veterans and their Families;

· To eliminate the unfair/unjust CPP (Canada pension plan) benefits reduction programme affecting retired and disabled Military/RCMP Veterans at age 65 or sooner if they become disabled. They have fully paid for and earned their Annuity;

· To eliminate the unfair Annuity reduction associated with the SISIP plan; (Service Income Security Insurance Plan)

· To include the VIP (Veterans Independence Programme) to all widows of Veterans;

· To increase the Survivor’s Annuity amount upon death to 66% from the current 50%; and

· To increase the SDB (Supplementary Death Benefit) to $ 10,000 and be in line with the Public service death benefits.

It is disturbing to hear the words ”Thank you for your service to our Country” during Remembrance week! This week of ceremonies is set aside for Canada to acknowledge its Veterans who have given the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the freedom of our Country. The Government of Canada needs to take care of their widows and children. It must also take care of its disabled Veterans and their Families. Stop these cost cutting measures! Terminate the lump-sum payments to our disabled Veterans. Award our Veterans a monthly tax free disability income and provide proper medical care to them and their Families. They have earned it!

Mr. Blackburn, MP your petty crumbs resolution are not supported! Unfortunately, media coverage, public pressure and class action lawsuits are the only venue left to Veterans and their Families to resolve their issues.

Military/RCMP Veterans and their Families have gallantly served our Country Canada! They deserve to be treated with fairness, justice and dignity!

Ottawa - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), along with the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, will announce important changes to the Agent Orange ex gratia payment.

In September 2007, the Government of Canada announced a one-time, tax-free ex gratia payment of $20,000 related to the testing of unregistered U.S. military herbicides, including Agent Orange, at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown in New Brunswick during the summers of 1966 and 1967.

We have just had our Festive Concert at the high school. The attached picture is our first collection. We started to collect on Nov. 10 at our Remembrance Day service and today they are filled. There are 3-6 cubic foot boxes stuffed to the top. They are probably about 150 pounds each, maybe more. I will be picking up more boxes after Christmas to keep it going.

I hope this lightens your heart, as it does mine, and gives you the same pride for what our young people have done.

Democracy starts with inclusiveness.

Had anyone in the entire memberships of many Veterans organizations been apprised of the New Veterans Charter (NVC)?

I appreciate the welcoming of non-Veterans into the associations but to make life long decisions for Veterans needs the careful consideration of the fall out. It needs unadulterated inclusiveness of all. Was that done? It appears not.

And it appears to be getting worse.

If you were to think about it, the NVC in the way it treats our nation's Veterans is a blatant violation of their rights.

Equality, under the Charter of Freedoms and Rights, is it not the same for all? Are some more entitled to better pensions because of their position?

Our nation's Veterans' they fight for our nation and do a job that less than 1% of Canadians will do and the NVC, this is how we are going to fix the economy? For all Canadians anywhere, can you answer this question in the name of equality!

Why is a Member of Parliament more equal than a Veteran?

A Member of Parliament (MP) can serve for 8 years and get a Pension for Life yet a Veteran can serve for nine years, get their legs blown off or suffer other mental, physical, spiritual and psychological wounds and gets a one-time payment and no pension.

Where in the name of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms gives a Member of Parliament more rights than a Veteran?

Let's get serious here folks this is making our Veterans victims and this has got to stop.

Excerpts from Dave Plugliese, a writer; who has shared an email of Robin Brentnall, CD of Gambo, NL "Recently, the Minister of Veterans Affairs announced that the Conservative government was taking care of veterans and soldiers by making changes to the New Veterans Charter.

What Canadians and the media were unaware of is this:

The Lump sum payment is now able to be spread out over time. That in itself seems reasonable but you must understand, if the soldier dies before it is all collected, it does not get dispersed and the family gets nothing. With the old monthly payment, the family continued to receive 50% of the monthly payment for the rest of their life."

"The Conservative government tells everyone that a soldier or veteran will receive a minimum of $40,000 per year. That's not the government paying them; it's the 75% from Manulife under the Long Term Disability SISIP. If a soldier or veteran does not take rehab training or prove they are not able to work, that payment is discontinued. At 65, the Manulife insurance ends, leaving the veteran with Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security."

"The $58,000 for severely injured soldiers is another spin. What most don't realize is that it will not become law until it passes the Senate and then, if it does pass, will only be for soldiers injured in "battle". Our troops will cease to be in "battle" in July 2011, the same time this wonderful legislation is to begin. The catch is a soldier will be "training only" so the clause of injured in battle will never fit the scenario. Therefore, a soldier will NEVER qualify for the $58,000 because they were training, not in battle. It's not retroactive to those who may be injured in battle between now and July 2011."
