A "message" from Message - Was the 6 who died for Canada, Canada's biggest single loss since the Korean War?
Col. Don Ethell draws my attention to a CTV broadcast in which Lloyd Robertson described Sunday's incident in which six Canadian soldiers were killed when a LAV III was destroyed by an improvised explosive device, as the "biggest single day loss suffered by Canadian Forces since the Korean War."
In combat, perhaps. However, peacekeeping also took a heavy toll.
In August 1974, nine Canadian peacekeepers were killed when their De Havilland Buffalo was shot down by Syrian surface-to-air missiles over the Bekaa Valley. The bodies were returned to Canada, but 33 years ago less attention was paid to such matters, and the incident has largely faded from public recollection.
Ethell comments, "Dead is dead. It doesn't matter if you are killed by a Syrian SAM or a roadside bomb in Afghanistan, or in the former Yugoslavia. You have made the ultimate sacrifice for your country. One cannot and must not be placed at a higher priority than the other."
