Winterlude Ice Sculpture and Wreath Laying to Honour 60th Anniversary of NATO
Ottawa - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and Marie Lemay, Chief Executive Officer of the National Capital Commission, will honour the 60th anniversary of Canada's participation in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) by illuminating a NATO-themed ice sculpture as part of Winterlude 2009.
Mr. Thom Joordens, President of the NATO Veterans Organization and local Veterans will also be attending the event. Ambassadors from NATO member countries will be in attendance in honour of those who have served and continue to serve NATO.
The sculpture's main feature is a compass, NATO's emblem, encircled by the Sabre jet, the St. Laurent class destroyer and the M113A3 personnel carrier, as well as three peacekeepers signifying Canada's important military contribution to the alliance. Flags of the 26 NATO member countries will fly around the sculpture, similar to the layout of the NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.
